The ECOWAS-SPAIN Migration Project (ESMP) of the Legon Centre for International Affairs and Diplomacy (LECIAD), University of Ghana, Legon, has ended training for fifteen migration management officers. The ESMP Project, which is organised with funding from the ECOWAS-SPAIN Migration Fund aims at enhancing knowledge on the Community’s legal frameworks for free movement as well as create awareness on labour opportunities in the region. It is made up of three parts - a Web Portal that will serve as a one-stop information platform on migration; and two training courses – for migration management officials and editors of various media houses.
The first of the two training courses, the pilot course for the immigration management officers, was held from 26-30 January 2015, for officials of the Ghana Immigration Service and the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority. It comprised Modules on the Context of Intra-Regional Mobility and Migration in West Africa, International Legal Frameworks on Migration/Migrant Rights, Operational Procedures and Standards for Border Management, Protecting Migrants in Challenging Situations and Enhancing Operational Skills for Protecting Migrants. The course was facilitated by experienced migration practitioners and academics.
